Immersing Bapu’s ashes

Fulfilling their wish: Gandhiji’s great grand-daughter Nilamben Parikh scatters from an urn the ashes of the Father of the Nation in the Chowpatty Bay off Mumbai on Wednesday, his death anniversary. The urn was earlier carried from Mani Bhavan through the streets to the seafront in a procession, which comprised the Mahatma’s relatives, schoolchildren and elderly followers. The family members took the ashes nearly one-and-half kilometres into the sea on a flower bedecked motorboat. A ceremonial guard of honour was given at a ceremony prior to the immersion.
