NEW YORK: Dr. Karan Singh, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), now on a visit to United States, was honored with Shri Chinmoy Award on October 27 in New York in recognition of his life long contribution to world peace and harmony.

Dr. Karan Singh was also bestowed with the Juliet Hollister Award by the Trustees of the Temple of Understanding honoring him for his many years of distinguished service at the highest levels of government, international affairs, and education, and his deep and long standing commitment to fostering interfaith cooperation as the International Chairman of the Temple of Understanding. Also honored with the same award on the day were Rev Dr. Szan Johnson Cook and Fr. Thomas Keating.

Dr. Singh has had a distinguished career encompassing a wide range of responsibilities as a scholar, diplomat and respected political personality. He was elected Sadar-I-Riyasat by Jammu & Kashmir Constituent Assembly (1952), became Governor of Kashmir (1964), was appointed as Central Minister for Tourism & Civil Aviation (1967), was elected to Lok Sabha from Udhampur constituency (1971), and appointed as Minister for Health and Family Planning (1973) and as Minister for Education & Culture (1979). He was India’s Ambassador to the USA (1989-91). He became President of the Auroville Foundation (1991), was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir (1997) and he is the Co-Chairman of the Indo-French Forum.

Currently, Dr. Karan Singh holds the post of President of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
