I just watched this episode of "Nova Science Now" and was again amazed at how often new scientific research inspires me to gratitude and wonder at the divine miracles that are intrinsic to life on Earth.
For example, there's increasing evidence that cosmic rays may be the necessary igniters of lightning. Imagine: the death breath of vast suns billions of miles away and millions of years ago setting off the millions of lightning strokes that occur here on Earth every day. And besides playing an important role in weather and atmospheric chemistry, it may be that lightning was involved in the creation of the first life from non-living constituents. - What a cosmic drama of death creating new life across vast apparent separations of space and time! The posting of the video clips is great. I really love the nova show, although we are not trying to detect any sources of lightening from deep space. Those guys sending off the balloon at the end of the clip, looks like me or my crew during a storm. balloons do strange things in 50 mph winds. rich |
