Our Purpose

Vision: To consider emerging planetary science and culture in the light of Sri Aurobindo&#39;s integral yoga through mutually respectful dialogue, creative imagination, critical inquiry and non-dual epistemologies.

Mission: To discern trends within contemporary arts, sciences and technologies which appear to facilitate (or not) the co-evolution of integral spirituality, scientific research and emerging planetary culture.

Goals: To foster intra- and inter-community dialog among those who actively aspire to create a terrestrial environment which will advance an integral evolution of consciousness and thus a world of increasing truth, beauty and sustainable human unity.

Second of two articles on a new science whose principles are that of emergence rather than reduction. The idea of reinventing the sacred is an interesting one since emergence rekindles a wonder in an irreducible Mystery . Interesting also is the fact that even as Lanier, Kaufmann, and other complexity scientist steadfastly avoid mapping a specific metaphysical narrative on to their descriptions of reality, in the end wind up with a view which shares much with Advaita or Buddhist constructions of the world. However, although the new science of emergence attempts to speak to human agency and observation, the phenomenological and social spheres of experience seem lacking in their calculations for achieving what could be called an integral view rc...&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
&lt;i&gt;Reductionism has led to very powerful science. One has only to think of Einstein’s gen-

eral relativity and the current standard model in quantum physics, the twin pillars of

twentieth century physics. Molecular biology is a product of reductionism, as is the

Human Genome Project.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
But Laplace’s particles in motion allow only happenings. There are no meanings, no

values, no doings. The reductionist worldview led the existentialists in the mid-

twentieth century to try to find value in an absurd, meaningless universe, in our hu-

man choices. But to the reductionist, the existentialists’ arguments are as void as the

spacetime in which their particles move. Our human choices, made by ourselves as

human agents, are still, when the full science shall have been done, mere happenings,

ultimately to be explained by physics.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

In this book I will demonstrate the inadequacy of reductionism. Even major physicists

now doubt its full legitimacy. I shall show that biology and its evolution cannot be re-

duced to physics alone but stand in their own right. Life, and with it agency, came na-

turally to exist in the universe. With agency came values, meaning, and doing, all of

which are as real in the universe as particles in motion. “Real” here has a particular

meaning: while life, agency, value, and doing presumably have physical explanations in

any specific organism, the evolutionary emergence of these cannot be derived from or

reduced to physics alone. Thus, life, agency, value, and doing are real in the universe.

This stance is called emergence. Weinberg notwithstanding, there are explanatory ar-

rows in the universe that do not point downward. A couple in love walking along the

banks of the Seine are, in real fact, a couple in love walking along the banks of the

Seine, not mere particles in motion. More, all this came to exist without our need to

call upon a Creator God.....&lt;/i&gt;

    <description>&lt;i&gt;…In unexpected ways, science and mysticism are joining hands and reinforcing each other. That&#39;s bound to lead to new movements that emphasize self-transcendence but put little stock in divine law or revelation. Orthodox believers are going to have to defend particular doctrines and particular biblical teachings. They&#39;re going to have to defend the idea of a personal God, and explain why specific theologies are true guides for behavior day to day. I&#39;m not qualified to take sides, believe me. I&#39;m just trying to anticipate which way the debate is headed. We&#39;re in the middle of a scientific revolution. It&#39;s going to have big cultural effects.&lt;/i&gt;</description>

This paper seeks a long overdue critical exploration of Sri Aurobindo&#39;s evolutionary vision and how it might inform contemporary discourse on globalization and those regimes of techno-science whose productions propel its advance. That such a critical inquiry is overdue is regrettable because we live at a time in which we are undergoing what is perhaps our most rapid period of change in human history. We live in an era in which the dislocation of our physical, life and mental worlds seems to result from the pull of three strange attractors accelerating at different speeds.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Gazing out from the edge of digital culture in North America to do a critically inquiry into the future is problematic because our perspectives are already conjoined to the gaze of a culture entrained in exponential change. But what would constitute a future view? An epistemology of the Other? A discourse on the never quite? The future is that distant coordinate which is only know through its proximity to our present. So what does the present teach?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In America we are travelling so rapidly that from here we do not hear the voices of indentured knowledge workers standing in lines of up to mile, amidst the smoke and decay of south India, to compete with the multitudes of Heidegger&#39;s “standing reserve” for their conditions of economic bondages; of eight to twelve partitioned hours a day spent facilitating the global flow of virtual capital. Although the gaze from here may sense the desiring nature of the machine it lacks an epistemology for coping with its assemblages and a methodology for resisting its discipline.....&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

&lt;i&gt;Karen Armstrong is a one-woman publishing industry, the author of nearly 20 books on religion. When her breakthrough book &quot;A History of God&quot; appeared in 1993, this British writer quickly became known as one of the world&#39;s leading historians of spiritual matters. Her work displays a wide-ranging knowledge of religious traditions -- from the monotheistic religions to Buddhism. What&#39;s most remarkable is how she carved out this career for herself after rejecting a life in the church.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
At 17, Armstrong became a Catholic nun. She left the convent after seven years of torment. &quot;I had failed to make a gift of myself to God,&quot; she wrote in her recent memoir, &quot;The Spiral Staircase.&quot; While she despaired over never managing to feel the presence of God, Armstrong also bristled at the restrictive life imposed by the convent, which she described in her first book, &quot;Through the Narrow Gate.&quot; When she left in 1969, she had never heard of the Beatles or the Vietnam War, and she&#39;d lost her faith in God. ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

    <description>We have to keep in mind that Teilhard de Chardin’s Omega Point is in no way an object of scientific study, it cannot be; certainly it is not amenable to the Cartesian analysis. Actually it is a kind of both within and without, both at once; it is Within-Without, the originator and the culminator of the entire becoming that we are. Going a step farther, it is also the endless becoming in its own new dimensional possibilities. The Omega Point is trans-descriptive and trans-analytical, yet holding and encompassing all that we are, and all that we shall be, in its newer and happier truth. If transcendence is one of the attributes of this emerging and immerging Urge, then it is well understood that it will escape all scaling up or down, will prevent all quantification of the mysterious Within-Without. It cannot be described in terms of scientific measurements that are relative in the Einsteinean sense. Then, even on a lesser level to make man as an object of measurement and knowledge becomes fallacious. The notion of “true physics” projecting itself in the phenomenon of man eventually turns out to be non-scientific if we have to retain the full connotation and context of the physics proper. …</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;This book is a collection of twelve articles by R Y Deshpande based on Sri Aurobindo’s perspective of life and his vision of the future. The work consists of conference talks given by the author, literary praise for Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem Savitri, and refutations of criticism “levelled against” the poem. Deshpande honors some of the works by Sri Aurobindo’s closest disciples, gives an extensive critique of Kishor Gandhi’s book, Social Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and the New Age, and includes informative articles about India and the new millennium and the need for an Indian science.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The book begins with an excellent overview of Sri Aurobindo’s life, emphasizing his childhood and keen ability to learn languages, his interest in literature, and his involvement in India’s struggle for political freedom. Next we are introduced to Sri Aurobindo’s spiritual experiences. Especially interesting is the explanation of the power that brought Sri Aurobindo and the Mother together as a team to perfect the Integral Yoga. Some of the Sanskrit terminology in this chapter would be difficult for a reader who is unfamiliar with Sri Aurobindo’s poetry, psychology, and philosophy. Deshpande’s words and phrasing, however, are dynamic and joyful. One can actually feel the power of his aspiration to transcend our world of ignorance when he explains how the Mother discovered the means to awaken the body’s cells to the divine reality and how, upon his passing from the physical body, Sri Aurobindo gave the Mind of Light to the Mother as a parting gift.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Deshpande gives an excellent explanation of the spiritual discipline practiced by the Mother and how Sri Aurobindo made the supramental descent possible. On April 29, 1956, the Mother announced that the manifestation of the supramental had taken place. “A new light breaks upon the earth, a new world is born.” ... &lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;

    <description>We understand globalisation essentially in terms of economics, commerce, industry and political dynamics; but there are basic social, religious, philosophical, scientific, cultural or idealistic aspects which often get sidelined in the respective discussions. The question of humanity in its proper sense, of harmonious life of happiness as expressed by mystics, sages, rishis, enlightened thinkers is hardly raised and seen in its deeper or far-reaching implications. Globalisation today is driven by a motive force and does not have its true or authentic content offered to the larger collectivity in the enduring values of the spirit. It is a mechanistic or, to use the modern idiom, a digital phenomenon. The identity of man with things material, the appreciation of the wonder that living reality in its thousand moods is, the recognition of the all-pervasive beauty in nature, or the sweep of cosmic thought, the subtlety of creative perception and expression have to be a part of the global perception. There have to be different families and nations, there have to be different races, different languages, different arts, and even in the same kind of art different expressions, different games, different sports activities, different recreations; yet there can be a kind of genuine underlying globality in all our occupations. This world is not just a shrunken global village; it is one rich Family of God, &lt;i&gt;vasudhaiva kutumbakam&lt;/i&gt;, as says the ancient scripture. In it each member of the family has his own unique soul, his own inalienable individuality and it is that which is valued most in the progress of the both. In the all-inclusive collective life is provided the scope for one’s own uninterrupted growth which, in turn, helps to grow itself, symbiotically helping each other.     <description>&lt;i&gt;...[I recently read] &quot;The Devil&#39;s Doctor: Paracelsus and the World of Renaissance Magic and Science,&quot; by the British science writer Philip Ball. As part of an ongoing but essentially lazy quest to wrap my psyche around alchemy, I had recently been drawn towards Paracelsus: the wonder-working itinerant sixteenth-century healer who is sometimes cast as the Copernicus of medicine. Rejecting the leech-loving, bass-ackwards, and literally by-the-book healing practices of most medieval doctors, Paracelsus instead made room for a medicine based on plants, material causality, and self-healing powers of the body. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Having already brushed up against Paracelsus&#39; own rich but impenetrable prose, I was immensely relieved that Ball had appeared to lead me through the Renaissance thickets by the secondary hand. (I told you I was lazy.) Given the noodle-limp dollar, The Devil&#39;s Doctor was about the only thing I purchased in the UK. I read almost the whole thing on the plane ride home, in between marveling at the glittering, melting majesty of Iceland and Greenland as they unrolled below me and marveling at the complete absorption of all but one of my fellow travelers in the movies flickering across their cramped little screens. ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

&lt;i&gt;...Other experiences included the accessing of racial and collective memories. Individuals of Slavic origin experienced what it was like to participate in the conquests of Genghis Khan&#39;s Mongolian hordes, to dance in trance with the Kalahari bushmen, to undergo the initiation rites of the Australian aborigines, and to die as sacrificial victims of the Aztecs. And again the descriptions frequently contained obscure historical facts and a degree of knowledge that was often completely at odds with the patient&#39;s education, race, and previous exposure to the subject. For instance, one uneducated patient gave a richly detailed account of the techniques involved in the Egyptian practice of embalming and mummification, including the form and meaning of various amulets and sepulchral boxes, a list of the materials used in the fixing of the mummy cloth, the size and shape of the mummy bandages, and other esoteric facets of Egyptian funeral services. Other individuals tuned into the cultures of the Far East and not only gave impressive descriptions of what it was like to have a Japanese, Chinese, or Tibetan psyche, but also related various Taoist or Buddhist teachings. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
In fact, there did not seem to be any limit to what Grof&#39;s LSD subjects could tap into. They seemed capable of knowing what it was like to be every animal, and even plant, on the tree of evolution. They could experience what it was like to be a blood cell, an atom, a thermonuclear process inside the sun, the consciousness of the entire planet, and even the consciousness of the entire cosmos. More than that, they displayed the ability to transcend space and time, and occasionally they related uncannily accurate precognitive information. In an even stranger vein they sometimes encountered nonhuman intelligences during their cerebral travels, discarnate beings, spirit guides from &quot;higher planes of consciousness,&quot; and other suprahuman entities...&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Perhaps Grof&#39;s most remarkable discovery is that the same phenomena reported by individuals who have taken LSD can also be experienced without resorting to drugs of any kind...The Grofs call their technique &lt;b&gt;holotropic therapy&lt;/b&gt; and use only rapid and controlled breathing, evocative music, and massage and body work, to induce altered states of consciousness. &lt;i&gt;The question we have to consider in this essay is whether Jesus, regarded as the founder of the Christian religion, actually believed in the God of the Jews or in any God in Heaven and thus divided reality into two worlds. The writers of the four gospels seem to think he did, and the churches both Catholic and Protestant, deriving their doctrines largely from these gospels, follow this view. The gospel writers were naturally influenced by the popular Jewish religious sentiment of the time as well as by prevalent pagan Greek and Egyptian eschatological beliefs. Their writings reflect the feelings and mirror the beliefs of the ordinary man  the soldier, merchant, artisan, slave living in a world of differentiation, division, hostility and discord. To the simple man whose mental capacities denied him a wider, more penetrating vision, this division was the reality, the truth. Did Jesus also subscribe to this idea of the world, or is there proof to the contrary? Was he a dualist, a believer in two realities and two worlds: this one here, and another above  or was he a monist, a man to whom reality was one unitary, organic whole?&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
...Most Christians are acquainted with those sayings in John&#39;s gospel which explain reality from a monistic point of view, such as the famous John 17:22: &quot;And the glory (of oneness) which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, as we are one.&quot; But in addition to these famous words there is a whole collection of monistic sayings of Jesus which the church literally dropped under the table. What kind of work is this Gospel according to Thomas, which is officially regarded as &quot;apocryphal,&quot; unauthentic, not admitted to the New Testament canon? ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

&lt;i&gt;SCIENCE, we are repeatedly told, is the most reliable form of knowledge about the world because it is based on testable hypotheses. Religion, by contrast, is based on faith. The term &quot;doubting Thomas&quot; well illustrates the difference. In science, a healthy skepticism is a professional necessity, whereas in religion, having belief without evidence is regarded as a virtue.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The problem with this neat separation into &quot;non-overlapping magisteria,&quot; as Stephen Jay Gould described science and religion, is that science has its own faith-based belief system. All science proceeds on the assumption that nature is ordered in a rational and intelligible way. You couldn&#39;t be a scientist if you thought the universe was a meaningless jumble of odds and ends haphazardly juxtaposed. When physicists probe to a deeper level of subatomic structure, or astronomers extend the reach of their instruments, they expect to encounter additional elegant mathematical order. And so far this faith has been justified.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The most refined expression of the rational intelligibility of the cosmos is found in the laws of physics, the fundamental rules on which nature runs. The laws of gravitation and electromagnetism, the laws that regulate the world within the atom, the laws of motion — all are expressed as tidy mathematical relationships. But where do these laws come from? And why do they have the form that they do? ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

    <title>What I&#39;m optimistic about (and not), by Ray Kurzweil</title>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Optimism exists on a continuum in between confidence and hope. Let me take these in order. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I am confident that the acceleration and expanding purview of information technology will solve within twenty years the problems that now preoccupy us. -- Consider energy. We are awash in energy (10,000 times more than required to meet all our needs falls on Earth) but we are not very good at capturing it. That will change with the full nanotechnology-based assembly of macro objects at the nano scale, controlled by massively parallel information processes, which will be feasible within twenty years. Even though our energy needs are projected to triple within that time, we&#39;ll capture that .0003 of the sunlight needed to meet our energy needs with no use of fossil fuels, using extremely inexpensive, highly efficient, lightweight, nano-engineered solar panels, and we&#39;ll store the energy in highly distributed (and therefore safe) nanotechnology-based fuel cells. Solar power is now providing 1 part in 1,000 of our needs, but that percentage is doubling every two years, which means multiplying by 1,000 in twenty years.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Almost all the discussions I&#39;ve seen about energy and its consequences (such as global warming) fail to consider the ability of future nanotechnology-based solutions to solve this problem. This development will be motivated not just by concern for the environment but also by the $2 trillion we spend annually on energy. This is already a major area of venture funding.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Consider health. As of just recently, we have the tools to reprogram biology. This is also at an early stage but is progressing through the same exponential growth of information technology, which we see in every aspect of biological progress. The amount of genetic data we have sequenced has doubled every year, and the price per base pair has come down commensurately. The first genome cost a billion dollars. The National Institutes of Health is now starting a project to collect a million genomes at $1,000 apiece. We can turn genes off with RNA interference, add new genes (to adults) with new reliable forms of gene therapy, and turn on and off proteins and enzymes at critical stages of disease progression. We are gaining the means to model, simulate, and reprogram disease and aging processes as information processes. In ten years, these technologies will be 1,000 times more powerful than they are today, and it will be a very different world, in terms of our ability to turn off disease and aging. ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

    <title>Higgs Boson—A Matter of Physics</title>

    <description>Is there a smallest piece of Matter? The question is short and simple but is of profound significance. But then why should such a question be posed at all, what could have prompted it to be put in that way? It already posits somewhere a distinct possibility which could have arisen from some deeper intuition about things that are not just aggregates or composites of their ingredients. No wonder we get different answers to it. Plato held that the elemental things are irreducible geometrical figures. Aristotle conceived all substances to be indefinitely breakable. Kant considers the phrasing of the question is such that it becomes unanswerable, which means that our way of thinking about these subjects is inadequate. It is unfortunate that young Heisenberg was unkind to Plato and spoke rather hastily that Plato’s ideas were “ridiculous”. He modified Plato by suggesting that not geometrical but mathematical forms alone can describe them. The present-day physicists do not pretend to answer the question but tell us to go out to do things and observe.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Yet, if we are true to thought, there are certain fundamentals which cannot be ignored. It is a spirituo-metaphysical fact that atomicity is due to the action of the cosmic Mind. The character of Mind is to analyse and analyse, divide and divide by fracturing things to bits, breaking them to a vanishing point yet without making them disappear altogether. If this nature of Mind is recognised then we see that it at once makes Aristotle’s infinite divisibility an aspect of its working. Regarding the world of ideas seen by Plato, however, we will have to be first sure about its location. Could it not be that this world exists somewhere far beyond the range of the cosmic Mind itself, for mental understanding is not the last summit of knowledge? If true, then we need not dismiss atomicity which might be occurring not in his world of ideas but elsewhere about which Plato may not be speaking at all. Kant is talking of human mind trying to read the cosmic Mind, and beyond, and hence it is unable to opine either way.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Yet, in spite of all these astounding gains and all these advances, there is the uneasy sense of inadequacy and disappointment. We get a feeling that we are investigating the physical world and developing means to arrive at the knowledge of the things, but we fail to recognise or experience the depths of the truth that lies beneath it. Indeed, one begins to wonder if the gigantic machines that have been built, and also planned, will at all reveal the truer materiality of Matter. The formulae of Science may be pragmatically correct and infallible, but they do not disclose the intrinsic how or why; rather they have the air of the formulae of a cosmic Magician, precise, irresistible, automatically successful each in its field, but their rationale is fundamentally unintelligible. When Einstein arrives at the equivalence of mass and energy he is simply stating the mechanical interconvertibilty of the two without being aware of the truth of existence and the truth of force behind them. The simultaneous emergence of quantity, design, number and of quality, property, character does not get revealed in E equals mcsquare.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;...In physics, too, there is a Central Dogma, which I have dubbed ‘the evolutionary paradigm’. It is the notion that physics can be neatly divided into a kinematical part, which concerns the description of a physical system at an instant of time, and a dynamical part, which concerns the evolution of a physical system from earlier to later times.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The laws of physics are correlation laws. In classical physics, states are correlated deterministically, so earlier states can be used to predict later states (and later states can be used to retrodict earlier states). Quantum physics correlates measurement outcomes statistically, so earlier measurement outcomes can be used to predict the probabilities of the possible outcomes of later measurements (and later measurement outcomes can be used to retrodict the probabilities of the possible outcomes of earlier measurements). Because the quantum-mechanical correlation laws are genuinely probabilistic, they may not conform to the evolutionary paradigm.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
And they don’t. For one thing, the time-symmetry of the laws of physics is at odds with the unidirectionality of the evolutionary paradigm, which has its roots in a physically unwarranted projection into the world of the way we perceive the world. (This casts doubt on the appropriateness of the evolutionary paradigm even for classical physics.) For another thing, the interpretation of a quantum state as an evolving physical state (rather than as a mere computational device) gives rise to no end of pseudo-questions (and gratuitous answers), such as the notorious questions of where and when and how (and with respect to which basis) the wave function collapses ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

Exceedingly popular among quantum physicists and string theorists, these &quot;multiverse&quot; ideas attempt to account for our universe&#39;s life-friendliness by proposing that it just happens to be one of billions of other universes that didn&#39;t turn out so well. After all, in a &quot;multiversal&quot; ocean of zillions of infinitely varied soap bubbles, they reason, there would have to be at least one with the precise qualities necessary to give rise to living beings like ourselves, and of course, that&#39;s the one we&#39;re in.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Still other scientists, arguing on behalf of what&#39;s known as the anthropic principle—the general idea that our universe&#39;s life-friendliness is not a random accident—find this kind of speculation absurd. &quot;To be blunt, in my view, it&#39;s just giving up,&quot; cosmologist James N. Gardner, author of &quot;Biocosm,&quot; told WIE. &quot;It represents a failure to recognize that just as the appearance of a seemingly well-tuned natural world constituted a vital set of clues for Darwin to follow, so, too, does the appearance of a seemingly well-tuned cosmos constitute a vital set of clues that should be pursued.&quot; Arizona State University physicist Paul Davis agrees. In his latest book, &quot;Cosmic Jackpot: Why Our Universe Is Just Right for Life,&quot; he argues that most theories about a multiverse simply represent a failure of the imagination. He much prefers two alternatives: 1) the idea that there is some kind of implicit life force or evolutionary impulse guiding the emergence of life and consciousness in our universe, or 2) what&#39;s been described as Davies&#39; &quot;self-creating universe in a teleological backward causation&quot; theory.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
He proposes that the natural laws forged so precisely fourteen billion years ago in the big bang happened to favor the eventual emergence of life because our existence as living beings, here and now, actually fine-tuned them to be that way—retroactively. &quot;Crazy though the idea may seem at first,&quot; Davies explains, &quot;there is in fact no fundamental impediment to a mechanism that allows later events to influence earlier events.&quot; Invoking arcane mysteries of quantum physics such as entanglement, nonlocality, and the idea that conscious observation plays an essential role in &quot;collapsing&quot; quantum potentials into concrete reality, Davies contends that the presence of conscious observers today is no accident. Our existence, he says, is due to the ability of conscious observations to ripple forward and backward in time, influencing even the quantum fluctuations that took place in the initial nanoseconds of the big bang itself—a time when the laws of physics were still susceptible to subtle tweaking. &quot;If the conditions necessary for life are somehow written into the universe at the big bang,&quot; Davies told &quot;New Scientist&quot; last fall, &quot;there must be some sort of two-way link.&quot; In other words, the universe may be continually pulling itself up by its own bootstraps—from the future to the past—as a self-correcting, self-contained, and very living system. ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>

We have been collecting data from a global network of random event generators since August, 1998. The network has grown to about 65 host sites around the world running random colors per egg per sec custom software that reads the output of physical random number generators and records a 200-bit trial sum once every second, continuously over months and years. The data are transmitted over the internet to a server in Princeton, NJ, USA, where they are archived for later analysis. Individual data create a random tapestry of color. The dot below indicates their global coherence.&lt;br&gt;

Our purpose is to examine subtle correlations that reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. We have learned that when millions of us share intentions and emotions the GCP/EGG network shows correlations. We can interpret this as evidence for participation in a growing global consciousness.     <description>The story of development and use of the atom bomb in the Second World War marks the beginning of another age in many ways. Sinister it may look from a certain point of view, but arrive it had to. The consequences in its wake might well be called “unprecedented, magnificent, beautiful, stupendous, and terrifying”, something which no man-made phenomenon had ever brought to man. But this had to happen, and it happened operationally due to the combination of two vastly different features, features associated with the academic institutions and military establishments, two very much dissimilar institutions, yet working together under the exigencies of the War circumstances.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The social transformation that we witness today had its overt roots in these remarkable developments. Today we live in the American era with all its glorious possibilities—and all its degrading pitfalls. Yet its creative spirit is something that should be recognised and applauded, creative in every walk of life, even though one may see a thousand vitalisitc and arrogant shortcomings in it. The great cycles of time needed this adventure of globalising consciousness and it is that which was effectively born on the fast lane of the Second World War. Where will this track lead us? Nobody knows; the answer to this question is not known. This zestful creative spirit has certainly opened itself to the wonderful working of Mahasaraswati, to put it in Sri Aurobindo’s terminology, but where do the other three indispensable cosmic powers stand, the luminous powers of Maheshwari, Mahakali, and Mahalakshmi? Can we have a deeper intuition of their presence and functioning in the universal order of things? If an answer to this question is to be found, the Sage must be born amongst us. Will that happen?</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;PACE - The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe - has release a report titled &quot;The dangers of creationism in education&quot; (Doc. 11375,17 September 2007, Committee on Culture, Science and Education, Rapporteur: Mrs Anne BRASSEUR, Luxembourg, ALDE).&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
The report has serious flaws, which are cause for concern. -- To begin with, the report fails to make necessary distinctions. For one, the word &quot;evolution&quot; is used indiscriminately to refer to (i) the empirical fact that evolution has taken place and (ii) the neo-Darwinian theory, which accounts for the empirical fact of evolution in terms of random mutations and natural selection.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
For another, &quot;creationist&quot; is used indiscriminately as a label for (i) those who claim that the world was created by God in six days and (ii) advocates of intelligent design (ID), who refer neither to a Supreme Being nor to Holy Scripture but merely put forward the hypothesis that certain aspects of the universe, notably the empirical fact of biological evolution and the structure of physical law, cannot be fully understood without reference to a superior intelligence — an intelligence that is not itself a product of biological evolution. ...&lt;/i&gt;</description>
