“Foucault, in a series of texts, had elucidated the bases for understanding how the subject was constituted in and through a dispositif that included technologies of domination. But what sent him on his journey to Greece was the conviction that a model for an alternative to such modes of subjectivity, the possibility for the constitution of a subject in autonomous fashion, through practices of freedom, might be found in the history of our own culture, in the Ancient world; that the Graeco- Roman world provided another modality for the ethical subject. The examples he gives of several potential liberatory inner technologies of self-fashioning come from the Stoic, Cynics, Epicureans, all of who innovated techniques for the control of and transformation of desire.” (Milchman and Rosenberg 207)
These inner technologies provide sharp blades to hew a path to our inner daemon but, the deeper they penetrate into our psyche the more becomes the danger that they assume the shape of the double edged sword. Without the support of an existential communitas, a community of individuals whose differences are equally shared in an experience of liminality together, or ones situatedness in a messwork of individuals adhering to principals of social and spiritual equality these inner technologies that provide tools for self-liberation, turn upon the subject devouring it in the process objectification. Self fashioning merely expresses the individuals power relationship to church, state or corporation. The self-making becomes self-governance, in which the self-fashioning subject is revealed to be merely a gradient of societal power relations.
The process used to discipline the subject by the state or church, obedience, confession and the corresponding process by which surrender of will flips the process of subjectivation so the self is fashioned through its objectification, having internalized the desires of its sovereign, state, church or corporation. The self that is fashioned through objectivication is the subject imagined by the governing authority, it is the self expressed as ideology
